Diarrhoea and Vomiting

Key Information

The Cause: Diarrhoea and vomiting are very common. In most cases, the cause is a viral stomach bug.

The Treatment: Because it is a virus, antibiotics will not help. Your body is brilliant at fighting it off on its own. Your job is simply to support your body while it recovers.

The Location: Because these bugs are highly infectious, the best place for you is at home. You rarely need to see a doctor for a standard tummy bug.

How to Manage at Home

1. Stay Hydrated (Most Important)

You lose a lot of fluid during these illnesses, so you must replace it.

  • Technique: Take small, frequent sips of water. If you drink too much too quickly, you might just bring it back up.
  • Food: Don't worry about eating if you don't feel like it. Focus on drinking. As you feel better, gradually reintroduce bland foods.

2. The 48-Hour Rule

To avoid spreading the infection to others:

  • Stay Off: You must stay off work or school until 48 hours after your last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting.
  • Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.

When to Contact Us

While most cases resolve in a few days, there are specific signs that indicate you need medical advice.

  • Severe Dehydration: You are not passing much urine, feel dizzy, or feel confused.
  • Blood: You have bloody diarrhoea.

For Children:

Please seek advice if:
